A candidate writes a cover letter for a job at your firm.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to an advertisement your company published in The Guardian on 3rd June for a position in the human resources department. I believe my background and experience will allow me to make a positive contribution to your company.

I like to work as part of a team. I think teamwork is very important in this area. I am good at listening to people and I enjoy helping people with different problems. Because of my most recent job, assistant to the Director of Marketing, I also find it easy to make quick decisions. It is important to be able to do this in human resources. I do not mind earning a very large salary at first, especially in a job that I believe will be enjoyable for me.

I am very interested in becoming a part of this department. The position looks very interesting to me, both personally and professionally. I can be contacted anytime on the phone number or e-mail address in my CV. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

His first interview:

Hello. Welcome to B&B.

Hello. Thank you.

My name is Ms. J. I am the director of Human Resources. What is your name?

My name is John. It's very nice to meet you.

And you. Please come into my office. Have you always worked in publishing?

Yes. I worked in editing at R. Publishing for five years. Before that, I worked as a secretary at another publishing company.

Excellent. Tell me – What do you consider to be your greatest strength?

I am always very organised.

Good organisational skills are often very important in this job. How do you normally travel to work?

I usually take the bus, but I drove today.

Unfortunately there is not a reliable bus service for this area. Can you drive to work every day?

That should never be a problem.

Okay. If we offer you the position, are you available to start immediately?

I'm sorry. I'm not available until next week. Is that a problem?

No, that's fine. We usually call applicants a few days after the interview. Do we have your phone number?

Yes. My home and mobile numbers are on my CV.

Do you have any questions for me?

No, not at the moment.

Great. That's all for now.

Thank you very much for your time. Goodbye.

Goodbye.

Tonight's party:

Hi. It's Charles.

Hello Charles.

Listen. I'm calling about tonight's party.

You are going, aren't you?

I don't really know. I might go, but I might not. I can't decide.

Oh, come on. You'll enjoy yourself. You might meet someone!

OK, I suppose I'll go then.

Great. So what are you going to wear?

See, that's my other problem. I don't know what to wear. I might wear my new blue trousers or maybe the black suit. What do you think?

I think that I'd wear the black suit.

But the black suit may be too small for me since I have gained some weight.

Well, then wear the blue trousers.

OK, I'll wear the blue trousers then.

How are you going to get to the party?

I might go with Joshua, or Emily, or I may drive myself. I don't know yet.

OK, I'll see you there. Bye.

Bye!

Espero que os sirva para mejorar el inglés. Saludos.
